"One day quite accidentally I happened to see the Manchester beginnings of 'GeEkgiRL'. The girl half of it was bent over a guitar against a wall, somewhat obscured by the general drone of people at a bar. Then she opened her mouth and could not be ignored... Based on the previous experience, a year and a few weeks later I went to see the girl play with a new (to me) formula. Ted on mandolin, Joel on double bass and Fi on guitar and footstool. Scribblings in my diary are somewhat reminiscent of the kind that Einstein must have excitedly written when he knew he had found something new and different and worth delving into. "If appearances are anything to go by this is a surprise, meant in the least offensive way. A small package with a Mary Poppins' handbag interior. Each time you think you've heard the extent of the range of songs and voice, you are cheekily revealed a little bit more, but not quite all. Everyone knows a beautiful sunset comprises of reds, oranges, purple and deepest grey-blue. This is a memorable sunset. Intriguing, mesmerising, Honest, candid and aching lyrics". nine months on and their little baby is growing into a fine young thing. Alternating between acoustic and electric sets, GeEky gimmicks and with a new piano to boot - adding yet another dimension to their sound. Fi's lyrics are clearly voiced from experience, yet are successful in how they entice, extend to and envelop an audience. Look around and anyone watching is internally singing a line or a song to someone in their memory. The drums and bass act as a puppeteer's sticks in the deliverance of the narrative. Words, clever in their simplicity, using idioms and cliches customised with nifty little twists. Sang through a twisted curl of a smile and with facial expressions which actually manage to make gurning quite an attractive thing to experience. The worse thing we do sometimes is try and compartmentalise a band or singer, but we always do. Delve into Fi's vocal box and you'll pick out a winning ticket every time. From the depths of Marianne Faithful to the fluttering heights of Kate Bush (Hollalullah) with tinges of PJ Harvey, Tori Amos, Alanis Morrissette, Fiona Apple, Ani DiFranco and Sarah McLoughlin and this is only the voice. There is no pigeon hole for Geekgirl's sound. The three stretch their musical abilities over the court and it's refreshing to not know where the ball will land next."
