Oasis Split & Kings Of Leon Kick Off

Am I the only person who is not surprised in the slightest that Oasis have split up? Don’t they normally split up every other week anyway? Or is it just when there is an R in the month? The sibling rivalry between the Gallagher brothers is now so common place it has become tiresome. We all know they will most likely get back together again once Peggy has talked a bit of sense into them.

Apparently, Liam smashed Noel’s guitar up and alleged that Noel wasn’t the real father of his daughter Anasis. Understandably Noel wasn’t happy about this and left the band, saying that the violent and verbal intimidation towards him had become intolerable. Admittedly this is more than a tiff and bear in mind Liam’s never even met Noel’s second child Donovan. Now I wouldn’t say the Gallagher brothers have ever kept up appearances, we all know they can barely be around each other for any period of time. Yet they know they are onto a good thing with Oasis, they are making a living out of something they love and a good living at that. In the short time since the band has disbanded they lost around £5 million, count it, £5 million in just a few days. So I doubt this split is going to last that long, before you know it Liam will have his new clothes range out, they’ll both release solo albums and then reform. You will all most likely be queuing up for reunion tickets this time next year.

Now one band I would be upset about splitting up would be Radiohead. Yep, oldies but goodies. After catching them at this year’s Reading Festival it reminded me of how amazing they are. What always impresses me about Radiohead is that unlike some bands they didn’t just find a sound that worked and stuck with it. They took a risk, experimented and evolved. They have never been a people pleasing band and rightly so, by following their integrity they proved what a truly genius band they are.

So, what else happened at Reading? Apparently, festival favourites Kings of Leon stormed off the stage again (yawn) and basically told the crowd to f**k themselves then stuck their fingers up at them, in a V shape as well, naughty. Fair enough, they’ve made some good music but is there really a need for the ego? Allegedly they told the crowd that they had worked hard to get where they are today. ‘Worked hard’ what? jangling your guitar and doing a bit of singing. Why don’t they go and try working in a factory putting lids on aerosol cans all day or doing some construction work and so forth. Then come back and tell me that being in a band is hard work. Oh I don’t half feel sorry for them living a rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle and earning millions, poor things. Purlease. Rant over.

Although, I’m going to leave the editorial on this last point, it may seem irrelevant but I’m so confused by it I had to mention it. I was innocently channel surfing the other day and I came across Columbo, so I obviously stopped on that channel because Columbo rules and all the cool people watch it. When lo and behold there was Johnny Cash. Yes, you heard me, Johnny Cash in an episode of Columbo. Two words. Gob and smacked. I still can’t get my head round it THE Johnny Cash in an episode of Columbo! It was the best Columbo episode ever! Even better than the episode starring Janet Leigh. Ok, so while I pop off to buy the Columbo box set you can all take a look at the website…

This week as always we have all the latest news and reviews. We have coverage from both the Reading and Leeds sites, which means you get the best of both festival worlds. Also we have a competition to win Fei Comodo tickets, but because the site is still under going a make over you have to have a mooch around to find it. All you need to do is scroll down to the bottom of the page and there you will find the site map. Then all you need to do is click on competitions. Easy. There is also an interview with Andy Bell from Oasis pre- split. Glasswerk’s featured gigs are The Parlotones, Deaf Havana and Goldie Lookin’ Chain. Enjoy.

Great piece. I for one wasn't surprised at the Oasis split - I read that Q interview with Noel and while part of me was thinking 'clever PR' - another part of me was thinking Noel has always come across as genuinely sincere... so there were real warning signs... plus, have they actually ever 'officially' split up? Maybe they have, but I don't remember ever reading official press statements or anything.

As for Radiohead - the fact they say they are dumping the LP format as a way of recording is very disheartening... In Rainbows as a complete listen is probably close to perfection in my opinion; greater than the sum of it's parts (while many others consider OK Computer as one of the greatest LP's ever recorded). I've always been an LP person... so that is even more worrying. It's been a strange month or two in the music world to say the least.
