Mojo Honours List 2009- Nominees Annouced
MOJO Magazine announced today the nominations for The 2009 MOJO Honours List as voted for by readers of the magazine. The winners will be revealed on Thursday 11 June as legends of music, unsung heroes and contemporary talent join together to celebrate the MOJO year in music. Now in its 6th year, The MOJO Honours List has become the most respected of all music magazine awards ceremonies, featuring five public nominated categories and special awards decided by MOJO Magazine.

Fleet Foxes top a triumphant year with nominations in an incredible three of the five public nominated categories. Fleet Foxes have enjoyed a meteoric rise, releasing their eponymous debut album just eleven months ago, and garnering critical and public acclaim which has propelled this Seattle-based quintet on to double platinum status in the UK alone. Their three nominations are for Album Of The Year, Best Live Act and Song Of The Year for ‘White Winter Hymnal’.

British alternative rock favourites Elbow and Tennessee foursome Kings Of Leon are best placed to spoil Fleet Foxes night both with two nominations each for Album Of The Year and Song Of The Year. Making their first ever MOJO nominations, Elbow are nominated for their Fiction released album ‘The Seldom Seen Kid’ and single ‘One Day Like This’. Also receiving debut MOJO Honours List nominations are the mighty Kings Of Leon with the album ‘Only By The Night’ and single ‘Sex On Fire’ both of which hit number 1 in the UK charts.

Paul Weller, following his MOJO Honours List 2008 Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music, confirms his continued longevity as his UK number 1, ninth studio album ’22 Dreams’ is nominated for Album of the Year. Paul Weller’s second nomination is for Best Live Act, hotly contested by other outstanding live performances from Fleet Foxes, Leonard Cohen, Seasick Steve and Radiohead.

The Breakthrough Act, one of the most sought after MOJO Honours List awards, throws a spotlight on new talent destined for mass appeal, an honour previously awarded to The Last Shadow Puppets, Seasick Steve, Corinne Bailey Rae and The Magic Numbers. The 2009 nominees are Gallows, White Lies School Of Seven Bells, Eli ‘Paperboy’ Reed & The True Loves and Glasvegas.

It was also announced today that the legendary and influential 60’s band The Pretty Things will be honoured at The MOJO Honours on 11 June, receiving the MOJO Hero Award. Bestowed by the magazine in recognition of a career in music that is both groundbreaking and, in our opinion, unsung. Previous recipients have included: Roger McGuinn, Roy Harper, Prince Buster, The Only Ones and Motörhead.

Phil Alexander, MOJO Magazine’s Editor-in-chief, commented: “The Pretty Things grew up with The Stones, beat Pete Townshend to the punch when it came to spawning the idea of the concept album with their 1968 effort, SF Sorrow, and then found themselves signed to Led Zeppelin’s own label. Punks before punk, they inspired everyone from David Bowie to the MC5 along the way. In fact, ask Noel Gallagher or the Kasabian guys about them and they’ll tell you just how much The Pretty Things matter. They are a classic British band in every sense. To my knowledge they’ve never won an award so this is long overdue and well deserved.”
