Chibuku Shake Shake Grand Re-Opening

They’ve been busy, the old Chibuku boys over the summer. Their Shake Shake enterprise may have been on a brief sabbatical from regular view, but that hasn’t meant a rest for the brains behind the operation. The 580 Limited and Richard McGinnis and Lewis Boardman partnership birthed The Shipping Forecast in May and has had a fantastic season thus far Bringing Gilles Peterson, Wolf + Lamb, Andre Galluzi, Joy Orbison and shedloads more to Liverpool has made for a scintillating summer of intimate sessions in Liverpool’s coolest new venue.

On distant shores, there has also been the work of Richard at Space Ibiza on the new flagship party Come Together, where shows from Kelis, MANDY and Leftfield have detonated in conjunction with premium White Isle parties like Monza and Meganite, including DJs such as Adam Beyer, Fake Blood, Marcel Dettman and Armand van Helden adding to the beguiling eclectism. Creamfields is also in tow once again with Chibuku hosting one of the most widely anticipated arenas. But the main business of Liverpool’s club land is coming sharply back in focus. And that season is kick-starting on Saturday 18th September. Chibuku is back.

As ever the first party is a statement of intent showcasing the club in its supersonic glory, triple spreading the music policy like only they know how. The Theatre is all about the avant-garde of house and techno, with mid-west superstar Claude von Stroke at the helm. A titan of the modern dance music scene, Dirty Bird’s Claude has injected a sense of fun and adventure back into four-four beats, sampling the weird and the wonderful for his oddball funk. Chibuku stalwart Dom Chung is in support, making the trip up north from down south to showcase his latest crate-digging finds.

And if the Theatre is detailing wonky house beats, things certainly aren’t getting straightened upstairs where the Loft has its own backdrop of wobble. Headlining here is one of the leading miscreants within the dubstep genre, Benga, fresh off a season taking his supergroup project Magnetic Man across the globe’s festivals. MC Youngman takes to the mic for this one. They’re supported by a man who has had an equally rowdy summer, Bristollian Joker, whose massive anthem ‘Tron’ has been a melodic slab of dancefloor pressure. Liverpool’s own proponent of dubstep and everything warped, Rich Furness, offers his unyielding support for the pair.

And the final component sees Kieran Hebden in his Fourtet guise take over Ink. A true heir to the Warp throne of sonic experimentalism, Hebden represents the best of British electronica, as clever and inventive as anything done by kindred spirit Flying Lotus and continuing the lineage of the likes of Aphex twin and Autechre. The WHP’s glorious new resident talent Jamie XX – yes, he of the band The XX! - and two-step whippersnapper Brackles keep the vibe funky and inventive.
