The Brute Chorus, Manchester and Birmingham

Glasswerk.co.uk presents...

The Brute Chorus
Thursday 16 September - The Ruby Lounge, Manchester
Friday 17 September - The Flapper, Birmingham

The Brute Chorus have been combining garage, blues and folk music with a scatology of Biblical stories, nursery rhymes and fairy tales since 2008. Their enormously accessible sound has managed to escape any generalised genre pigeon-holing, instead they’ve been carving out their own genuine, word-of-mouth buzz from their exciting live shows.

They beegn taking it to the people with a monthly residency at Camden’s infamous Hawley Arms pub. The band’s first releases, charming offerings of psyched-out garage-folk we’e put out on the Hawley Arms backed Bumpman records to widespread aclaim from Steve Lamacq, Zane Lowe, NME, The Fly amongst others.

The scuzzy blues-folk quartet took their splendidly raucous live shows on the road with a host of festivals apperances including Glastonbury, Camden Crawl, Great Escape, Secret Garden Party, Belladrum, Standon & Kendal Calling. As well as touring with the likes of Martha Wainwright, Rumble Strips, Ida Maria and even a trip to the seaside with Peggy Sue and The Pirates as well as numerous headline UK and European shows.

This led to the recording of the Brute Chorus debut album. In one heartstopping take infront of 300 of their most loyal fans at The Roundhouse’s FreeDM studios. They begged, borrowed and stole equipment from the likes of Rod Stewart, Lionel Richie and then with shaky hands, sweaty brows and a quick swig of JD they were all set to record… They inlisted producers Victor Van Vugt (Nick Cave, PJ Harvey, Gogol Bordello and Son’s and Daughters) and the Mercury nominated Choque Hosein (Black Star Liner, Hood, Lord Auch). Holed up for 5 weeks in their rehearsal residency above a Hackney pub, they practicied solidly to ensure the recording would be a success.

The album came out packaged in a attractive and collectable wooden sleeve hand-made by the band. It received a host of 5 star reviews from Clash, Artrocker, BBC and Drowned in Sound amongst others.

The Brute Chorus quietly slipped back under the radar just before Christmas, reducing their usually frenetic gigging schedule to a couple of secret shows and DJ sets in tiny locations with the likes of Good Shoes. Well now the band are ready to break cover, armed with a recording contract with East London indie label Tape, a new album in the bag and a host of shows to play across France, Germany, England and Scotland. The Brutes are back.

Having spent a snowy January recording in a tiny village hall in the depths of the Lake District the boys have returned to their native metropolis of London to prepare for the first of their 2010 engagements: a short jaunt through Europe beginning with a show in Paris with Reverand & The Makers followed by five dates in Germany with reformed cult alt rockers The Woodentops. No strangers to touring on a budget, the band have decided to travel via interail in the hope they’ll be able to squeeze in a bit of tourism between shows.

Back on Albion’s shores in early March the Brute Chorus will took a two week road trip offering British fans their first opportunity to hear material from their new album due for release late this summer. The first single from the album ‘Could This Be Love?’ was released late April, accompanied by a typically off-kilter video. Keep an eye out for The Brutes at a festival near by this summer!
