Tonight is a Reading warm-up gig for the live band of the moment Kasabian, somewhere nice and intimate like the Astoria then, it’s not quite the barfly but they still managed to sell out the 2000+ capacity venue in less than an hour.
Trap2 take to the stage for far too early at 7.30 for their short but sexy set of rock n roll floor fillers. Swirling guitars and squelching dance beats fight for attention as the band quickly pull a massive crowd with their blend of The Music meets the ‘Roses meets Led Zep guitar action. The band play songs from recent EP ‘Low Without Sound’ and showcase a new song ‘Tin Pigs’ which is riotous and sees the lead singer spitting his words out as the band prove they mean business. Next band up are ‘Louie’ noisy little upstarts that sound a bit like the Sex Pistols, two front men one your classic looking indy kid and the other like a fat Pete Doherty. They sound like they’ve got some pretty good tunes hidden away in the racket they’re making.
Kasabian take to the stage and they have the Astoria hanging on every word, beat and guitar riff as they blow the venue apart. There’s no cooler than thou’ crowd here, Kasabian are the band of the people and no one gives a fuck about showing they’re having a good time as they jump, dance and sing along word for word to every song. Serge and Tom battle for attention on the stage, strutting and posing like the cocksure rock n rollers they’ve now become as their chemically charged rock beats throw the crowd deeper and deeper into a frenzy. ‘LSF’, ‘Clubfoot’ and ‘Reason Is Treason’ are all brilliant in their own right and are met by a rapturous response. Bands are in their prime when they’ve got just the one album behind them, they know its good, the audience know it’s good, so each shows a greatest hit set and this is no exception!
Seeing Kasabian is like watching Oasis around the time ‘Definitely Maybe’ was released they’re bang up for it and put on the best live show you’ll see anywhere.
