Liverpool Music Week Round Up @ All Over Livercool!
Date: 4th November 2006
Support: Amazing Artists!

After the rampaging has settled we look back at the amazing success of Liverpool music week 2006. Mike Deane is a great man and has led a raft of people to bring this fantastic week’s event that is now becoming an important feature in the music calender.

A staggering 16 venues and around 220 acts from all aspects of local, national and international music. Here are Glasswerk’s observations of this magical week:

Bumper was a new host and held the opening party this year giving everyone a treat on why the buzz is coming back to Liverpool. The Jools Holland styled hoping from one stage to another paved the way for a non-stop night of music. After local Legends Shack enticed us with an acoustic set on Saturday the 4th November at The Carling Academy it was the Alterkicks who stole the show at Bumper. Gaining great press from the NME and tour supports with the likes of Dirty Pretty Things, the lads were on fine form giving superb anthems such as ‘Holiday’ and ‘Good Luck’

Tuesday saw the new fast-pop of ‘Go Faster’ at Bumper and further down in town, The Zanzibar gave the crowd an incite into ‘The Idiot Rate’. However it was indeed Hot Club De Paris that stole the headline show at Bumper with ‘Sometimesitsbetter’ sending the sweaty crowd into delirious rapture.

Wednesday saw Magnet showcasing impressive DJ sets from the likes of Gilles Peterson. Hannah’s Bar had psychedelic Jazz upstairs. That left Bumper hosting the growing ‘Cuckolds’ Harry with his double bass made sure the Cuckolds displayed their tight nit tunes with a very impressive set. ‘Requiem’ was a frantic mish-mash of guitars and foot-stomping beats. The Aeroplanes followed suit with rousing guitars and solid big band sounds. The Cuckolds were the favourites on the night!

Down to The Met on Thursday for the BBC unsigned sessions with The Affection catching the eye with raucous guitar belters. Bromheads Jacket featured at Barfly but it was John Smith that created the ambience at Bumper with his acoustic tinklings and his unique style of drumming on his guitar that made it so. Liam Frost also shone.

Friday let us in at the Static Gallery with Howie Payne, the former Stands frontman brining an intimate look at his new Dylan styled songs. The ASBOS shone at the Met with Delatosonic’s new boys ‘Tiger Picks’ impressing at Korova. Reggae and dub beamed out of Bumper with mellow Marley sounds. The Liverpool Batala Samba Band were visually great - all 16 of them!

After the record collectors fair on the Saturday at The Met, came the secret gig for the metallers. Bumper hosted the brilliant, Vib Gyor, The Aliens, Ambulance and the angelic sounds of Candie Payne.

However Saturday night belonged to The Veras. ‘Your Racket Club' has been featuring the likes of Alan McGee, Tim Burgess and The View are to come. This night was clearly the cream of the Liverpool bands. Eugene McGuinness is a genius as many shouted. Tiny Dancers mesmerised the crowd with their NME backed hype, although impressive they were quite miserable. Peter and The Wolf have really turned the notch up from older efforts like ‘Tommy’ to stuff off their new EP ‘Storey Tellers’. ‘The Reason’ and ‘Killing Time’ were very very impressive. Big things to come!

The Veras also have developed well, the complete sound on new tracks like Going To Gretna, Capulet and Modern Romancer gave the Zanzibar crowd a real pleasurable look at the leather clad rioters. The old favourites like ’Take Your Time’ got a good outing as well as the ever catchy ‘Sometimes. Again watch this secret rocket and get down to the next Racket night on December 9th (Keep it quiet but The View are playing). All that was left was for The Young Hearts (Fomerly Neon Hearts) to blaze their epic now EMI tunes to the crowd. Sean Butler has a strong army which look to be the next big name to come out of Liverpool. The most exciting night of Liverpool Music week and we hadn’t even mentioned that The Longcut were playing at Korova.

A fitting closing party on the Sunday saw The Vagabonds entertain and The Wombats again gaining great exposure bellowing out their skuzzy 3 piece tunes. Lyons &Tigers are always fun and the 747’s are due an award for their aeroplane guitars. However, 28 Costumes entertained the crowd with snow storms and fired up hysteria. ‘Inside Outside’ and ‘You Excite Me’ were in your face anthems that really should be charting! A fitting end to an amazing week.

How many bands must have I mentioned about going on to be big. The buzz is back and Liverpool is fucking ace….From the DJ,s metallers, reggae stars, to the bands and all those we missed out. A huge thanks to Mike Deane the organizer, a huge thanks to the artists, but most important of all thank you the people for enjoying such a lucky event.

It was great to see a wide range of people from young, old even to the odd tramp popping in…We hope you had a great time…’now go forth and preach the gospel’ see the artists and support local music. Roll on 2007!
