From what I can tell, Kasabian are a bit like Marmite – you either love them or you hate them. If you’re of the latter persuasion, I’ve no doubt that you’ll think this a typical Mancunian, Oasis-esque, repetitive tune with no real structure or definition, and it’ll really get on your tits. However if, like me, you belong in the former group, you should love it.
Unlike most bands, Kasabian seem to have sailed through the making of their second album, emerging from the studio slightly more mature and slightly more bearded, yet still managing to maintain their innate Kasabian-ness. Their sound has become more defined, and seems to be taking more inspiration from chilled electro than Top Shop indie these days – which can only be a good thing. There may be those who dismiss the band as cheap Oasis rip-off merchants, but apart from the vaguely Manc accent there is hardly any similarity between the two bands in terms of music. And if Oasis are ripping off the Beatles, then Kasabian should sound like them, which is clearly crap.
If you don’t like them, then I wouldn’t even attempt to persuade you otherwise – you will pretty much always hate them. But this is a genuinely good song, covering new ground for the band while using the same foundations they’ve always had. And even if these foundations are based in the 90s indie sound, is that so bad? I think not. For more information you can visit: http://www.kasabian.co.uk
