This new exciting Manchester outfit stir up a fascinating blend of haphazard distorted post-punk that is just about the right side of disciplined, to be chaotic and cathartic yet maintain a sense of structure and harmony, no easy feat.
Opening track ‘Not Excited’ is reminiscent of early Idlewild captain-era in the sense that it projects a band full of innovative ideas, with the ‘us against the world’ attitude that makes them so likeable. On first listen it’s easy to mistake ‘Sir Yes Sir’ as another one- dimensional punk threesome with little other than a bit of teenage angst. However delve deeper into the music and you will be pleasantly surprised. The band showcase excellent song craftsmanship, and a rare ability to conjure up both anarchic punk and delicate togetherness at the same time.
The Second half of the EP shows that ‘Sir Yes Sir’ are equally at home within the realms of laid-bare, slower recordings. It is in the songs such as ‘Horse Walking’ where Joseph Logan’s vocal talents really come into their own. His voice is dainty and fragile enough to encapsulate its audience but he maintains a cool and sullen aloofness which gives the band’s sound such a lo-fi Fugazi-esque feel to it. ‘Sir Yes Sir’ may not be about to shake up the world of mainstream alternative music but on the evidence of this stunning debut EP don’t be surprised to see them whip up a cult following in the not too distant future.
