Normally a review of a modern day Rolling Stones album would be littered with remarks and comments about ageing rockers. That would be the case here if it wasn't for the fact that their new album 'A Bigger Bang' is one of the most juvenile albums ever, especially lyrically. I put forward the case for the prosecution with evidence article 'a' in the shape of the opening gambit from the first single 'Rough Justice' - 'Once upon a time I was your little rooster, but now I'm just one of your cocks' - the double entendre that the Carry On team threw out for being just a tad too obvious. Evidence article 'b' comes from the Jagger rant 'Oh no not you again' - 'Everybody's talking, showing off their wit. The moon is yellow, I'm like jello, staring down your tits' - its like a comprehension exercise for dirty old men; rhyming for perverts.
There is some good stuff on show here but it just suffers through the company it keeps. The single 'Rough Justice' despite its lyrical failings, still rocks perfectly well, in spite of the fact, or maybe because, it sounds a hell of a lot like 'Brown Sugar'. All the good stuff just reminds you of old Stones tunes or of how good they were and how decidedly average this really is. In some ways its a good thing that the Stones are still going but maybe its time for a few more re-releases and greatest hits packages rather than churning out stuff like this.
