Gravy Train
Gravy Train @ The Free Butt, Brighton
Date: 28th November 2003
Support: Miss Pain

After the rigid, electro ‘ok but so what’ sound of Miss Pain washes over the heads of the audience at the oddly shaped, sweaty sweaty Freebutt, most of the audience seem left in a slightly bored slightly numbed state of daze, all staring into middle distance as if they’d taken part in some bizarre brain washing experiment….oh dear. Necks are craned towards the stage and watch faces tapped whilst the expectant crowd await the chance to shake their bootys to the might of the GravyTrain.

Then all at once, there’s a push and shove through the crowd and we’re crashing straight into a mass of immaculately funky bass lines that eventually blasts-off into ‘Sippin’ 4oz’. Butts are shaken and arms waved skyward “I go to the high school, I go to the high school..” WOAH! Suddenly, the venue name Freebutt starts to become more and more appropriate as things get heated down front. Various members of the group peel off until they’re getting dooowwn in VERY little and jumping around whilst trying to hang on to the next notes on their instruments.

The mood gets more and more frenzied until Funx can take it no more and immediately climbs on top of a high speaker to the side of the stage and starts a-humpin’ in just his pants and a smile! “..We’re sorry, we told him not to but sometimes he just can’t help himself” but quick as a flash, he launches himself from the speakers to leap on top of the crowd in a mid gig naked humpin’ crowd surf! Alas! There is a mass parting in the middle of the dancefloor and he is left falling slowly through their arms in the direction of the sticky, black, beer drenched floor. Unperturbed, he gets up and races down the front to join the rest of the members as they shout through ‘Burger Baby’ in all its glory. They’re drunk. Reaaall drunk, but heck! Ain't that all part of letting go?

Drum machine loops thunder through a race of high pitched beepy keyboards and we’re treated to an ultra fast version of ‘You Made Me Gay’ and once again the crowd start to accumulate to form one big jumping, singing chorus.” You made me gay girl you made me gay!” Hunx and Chunx work the writhing bodies down front, screaming at full volume and wrestling to keep control of their keyboards whilst the stage bounds up and down as the sound men at the back give way to their yells to “turn it uuppp!” Then as quickly as they had come on, they’re off again…’Do you guys know of any where we can stay?” Chunx shouts. It would seem that whilst they know how to work it on stage, they ain’t so good at arranging the essentials like finding a place to rest their heads after a night spent humpin and hollering (although I doubt they’ll be getting any sleep at all.)

The lights go up and the crowd reluctantly start to leave but whilst they wait outside, Chunx hops and skips past them into the darkness of another freezing Brighton night, in the frighteningly brave ensemble of a pair of pants and a massive grin. Someone mumbles “Classic!” under their breath…nuff said.
