The beat-boxing foursome that is Spit Kingdom, more than warmed-up the GLC crowd with their rnb/rap/drum n bass hard-edged sounds. Fronted by the legendary Killa kela (for those un-familiar with KK he is the Gucci of beat-boxing; it couldn’t get any better!) he’s performed as part of the Scratch Perverts and Rock Steady Crew, before being spotted by one Pharrell Williams (who counts himself as KK’ s biggest fan). After he supported N.E.R.D on their U.K Tour he was invited to join them in Europe and then America, forging a close relationship with the band. Killa Kela is due to put out his first solo album “ELOCUTION” through SONYBMG this year, even the die-hard (hip-hop sneering) indie kids could not ignore him, even people out of touch with urban music can appreciate that Spit Kingdom are pure class!
The temperature was blazing hot before the ferocious firm of Welsh Adidas-wearing wonders hit the stage! They came out to a scorching welcome of a sold-out crowd chanting GLC, with the passion of a Tennessee gospel choir! Before telling Liverpool they were “Safe as F***”, belting straight into songs of American music meaning S**t to them and asking the Valentine’s crowd to kindly “Cum baby Cum”. The mid-song banter was classic; “Here’s our Maggot off the telly everybody, he’s due to cameo in Eastenders next week”. Dedicating songs to all the ravers, “Embrace the glow sticks like its 98” (obviously this is the tip of the iceberg, the content of banter is too blue even for Glasswerk readers, it was Valentine’s night-use your imagination). The room exploded for “Guns don’t kill people rappers do” and the band ended with “21 ounces to go” not before treating us to singles like “Your Misses is a Nutter” and “Your Mother has a penis”. GLC are not a band that can be taken too seriously, however if you see past the sovereigns and ski-walk, their lyrics are highly observational and clever. Their flamboyant live shows won them best urban act at 2005’s Festival Awards, and you can’t deny their crude rap/pop songs are catchy! There was not one person without a smile on their face during the show, and although they may not re-write musical history; they know how to entertain a crowd. You knows it!
