“What a way to start the tour Liverpool, F**k me!” gasped the overwhelmed Jon Windle, lead singer of Little Man Tate. “It’s going to be downhill from here!” he joked. But as the enthusiastic fans made the floor bounce so hard the giant speakers had to be strapped up, there is no doubt they will be embraced with this much passion at every show.
Support act Alexis Blue warmed the crowd up nicely with their inventive riffs and cool sound. With their lead singer having more than a passing resemblance to the front man of the Kooks, chants of “Play Naïve!” were cruelly heard.
It was soon time for the main show as LMT rocked the room from the start with the deadly “Man I Hate Your Band” followed by the stunningly catchy “Court Report”. As the smartest dressed there - with a shirt and jumper combo, the foursome were soon up for the sweatiest award, as the room reached sauna temperatures.
The fact that the Sheffield lads haven’t even released an album yet, made the crowd’s response even more staggering. Every word of every song played was passionately sung back. Some may say the internet and downloads are killing many bands, but this is a prime example of the opposite effect. Without their website, which boasts half a dozen downloadable tracks, there would have only been half the people here tonight and definitely not the same electric atmosphere.
With gritty lyrics that delve into the belly of everyday life, the band will be instantly compared to their steel city comrades, the hugely successful Arctic Monkeys, but there is room for both in the hearts of indie rockers.
Upcoming single “What? What you got” was well received as the funky riffs and observational lyrics make for a fine offering. “Let’s get this into the top 40! That would be awesome”, pleaded the lead singer. And with the recent chart success of similar indie-rock bands like The Kooks and The Futureheads there is no reason why LMT can’t emulate the same support.
With infectious riffs played as tight as one fan’s spray on jeans, LMT put on an immense performance that was worthy of a bigger crowd and a better venue, which both are sure to follow soon. Every song could be a potential single, with the upcoming album destined to be one of the hottest in 2006.
Some bands sound better live and LMT are certainly one of them. You just have to be there to gaze in awe at the passion and pace in which they play, while keeping control of the sound so effortlessly. The fact the venue was so small and insignificant made the night that little bit more special. You felt you had been let in on a secret that is sure to be ousted to the world at any moment.
The ball ache of having to catch the last train back to Chester, meant I had to drag myself away early from one of the best gigs this year. The fact I was seriously contemplating forking out the £40 for a taxi back instead, showed the sheer impact Little Man Tate had made. They certainly won’t stay little for much longer.
