‘Infra Red’ is the second single to be released from Placebo’s fifth album ‘Meds’. With such a fine back catalogue the pressure has been on for Brian and the boys to come up with the goods but, faced with growing up and settling down, can the band recapture that classic Placebo sound?
The short answer is: yes. With great gusto. That nasal sneer cuts through the jarring, almost electronic intro with a tired-sounding lament, both bitter and melancholy, that belies the energy and drive at the song’s heart. As the chorus kicks in you can see Brian smirk, and you feel a familiar buoyancy, like a letter from an old friend, a swelling euphoria as the track takes off: Steve comes crashing in with thunderous drums over Stef’s sleazy bass and Brian’s guitar takes a serious beating. It’s like the best bits of so many Placebo choruses rolled into one. The verse then grinds down to a moment’s silence, a lull of anticipation before Molko launches back into the insanely catchy chorus. The fuzzy, electro production seems to heighten with the downward spiral of the song’s mood, adding a further, subliminal element to the tone of threat and sordid misdoings.
In the first verse, Brian is toying with us, playing up to what the critics may expect of a man now settled down and in his thirties, but this just makes the rock chorus all the more exhilarating. ‘Infra Red’ is sure to be a favourite on the festival circuit this summer. Placebo sound on top form – confident without their early cockiness, still playing with us, and still coming up with disarmingly good songs.
