London punk/funk dance duo Robots in Disguise have been growing in popularity since their relatively recent formation in 2005, playing sold-out shows in the capital and across the country even before the release of this, their debut album.
Members Sue Denim and Dee Plume will already be known to fans of cult comedy, The Mighty Boosh for the latter's relationship with the programme's co-creator Noel Fielding and for the fact that the pair have made guest apearances on the show.
The album kicks off with the ghostly gasps of "Turn it Up", a hazy singalong of grinding bass and yelps of, yes, you guessed it, "Turn it up!". This track, the band's forthcoming single, is great and is a perfect 3-minute encapsulation of their melodically funky sound. Another standout track is- "a fully-realised Technicolor description of a sleazy night out in any city anywhere in the world"-"La Nuit". It sounds like Edith Piaf lyrics remixed over a Blondie classic and then drageed kicking and screaming into 2006. A slightly unexpected choice of song is the cover of surely one of the greatest songs of all time: The Kinks' "You Really Got Me". But this is no cheap "let's play the song again and pass it off as good songwriting" cover. This is a tidy reworking of the 60s classic, with guitar solos replaces by screams and whistles and an accompaniment of a clanging drum..... aswell as the word "girl" being replaced by "boy".
So "Get Rid!" is a great debut. A series of surefire floorfillers, a constant assault on the hips and importantly, a collection of great pop tunes.
