2006 – The year of the angular guitars. When will it end? When will you go to see a band or hear a CD and say to yourself ‘Wouldn’t it be great if they didn’t copy everyone else and tried to do something different?’ Well, the time is now - the time is Revere.
What a breath of fresh air the 3 tracks on the CD are, they simply shine out like the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel. There is a post-rock feel about this band’s material and its overwhelmingly stimulating from start to finish. The whole of the EP’s focus is lead singer Stephen Ellis’ powerful and heartfelt vocals. His larynx is a cross between Matt Bellamy and Andrew Montgomery of Geneva fame. ‘Learning to breathe’ is the lead track. The opening beauty of the piano refrain is so simply marvellous Tom McRae would of wished he’d used it!! It’s simply a return to good old fashion song-writing with a full band of string musicians thrown into complimenting Ellis’ at times falsetto shriek. Revere make music that is simply beautiful to listen to. ‘How did you fall?’ demonstrates Ellis’ ability to stretch his vocals like an elastic band, something not heard since Jeff Buckley’s did ‘Hallelujah’. It’s orchestral, it’s tearjerking, it’s monsterous.
Revere tear away your heartstrings by delicately picking them out one by one rather than grabbing them in a huge uncouth handful. Quickly, find a space in your heart for this gorgeous collective before they steal the lot!
