I’m not sure if this band name is a play on the fact that they’re noisy, or a reference to the French word meaning ‘hazelnut’ or ‘nutty’, which they also are. If it’s either of those I’m impressed. If not, I’m fairly disappointed.
This song is catchy in the Raincoats/Bikini Kill vein, with the definite musical sound of the 5,6,7,8’s (of ‘Woo Woo’ from Kill Bill fame). Yet this isn’t an all-girl band, it’s a girl and 2 guys from London. It’s indie to an extent, but there’s more to it than that. Singer Shingai manages to encompass the power of Kathleen Hanna, the zany grace of Kate Bush and the dynamics of Jack White, while sounding 100% original. The guys project music that Ladyfuzz would be proud of, forming a background against which Shingai can happily warble away – and it is this that makes this song so great: they just sound like they’re having fun.
I didn’t even expect to like this, as I thought it might be an overly-feminist piece of contrived poop. But as my housemate put better than I ever could, “It makes me want to twist.” Nuff said. For more information you can visit: http://www.thenoisettes.com
