The NME Rock & Roll Riot Tour appears to have attracted a rather eclectic mix of people as it arrives in Liverpool. This is possibly due to the variations between the four bands that will grace tonight’s stage. Mini Horrors look-a-likes are rubbing shoulders with the polo-shirt massive!
First up are The Horrors, who enter the strobe-lit stage, the lanky 6ft7 frame of lead singer Farris Rotter looming from under a black cape. They storm straight into Jack The Ripper introducing a menacing set of noise, lights and covering audience members in black paint. Count in Fives and Sheena is a Parasite create mass hysteria down the front, proving that the next three bands have quite a difficult act to follow.
Following this difficult act are unsigned band The Dykeenies. The Scottish five piece may be the youngest, newest band on the tour but they play a tight, energetic set. All members are clearly having the time of their lives on the tour, throwing free t-shirts into the crowd. Debut single New Ideas has the whole audience clapping along with glee. It is unlikely they will remain unsigned by the end of the tour.
The Maccabees are the third band to take to the stage. Lead singer Orlando Weeks delivers his songs through his uniquely unusual voice as he bounces around the stage in a white hoodie, which frequently falls down, while the guitarist is sporting a ripped Dykeenies t-shirt. Clear crowd pleasers come in the forms of X Ray and new single First Love.
Before The Fratellis even enter the stage the crowd are chanting the opening of Chelsea Dagger, in anticipation of the headline act. And so The Fratellis enter to the crowds chants and dive straight into single Creepin’ Up The Backstairs followed by Cigarello. The audience interaction is kept to a minimum, as they concentrate on belting out an array of tunes taken from their debut album Costello Music. Album tracks such as Baby Fratelli and Got Ma Nuts From A Hippy go down just as well as Henrietta and new single Whistle For The Choir, but Chelsea Dagger is clearly the crowds song of the night. They encore with an acoustic version of For The Girl and end, rather bizarrely, with a cover of Goldfrapp’s Oh La La.
As the night comes to an end many fans have been converted to liking all of the bands on the tour, and the variously clad kids are rubbing shoulders with each other even more! For more information you can visit: http://www.thefratellis.com
