The Flaming Lips – At War With The Mystics 5.1 – 2 Disc DVD & CD

The Oklahoma born star trippers, The Flaming Lips, have exploded another sun with their latest release. A psychedelic package of all the best extras from their newest album, At War With The Mystics. With molten lead, it glues together everything a fan of The Lips could ever need to tide them over, through the cold winter nights. It contains the original album disc, but stuck to the back like the joy of Christmas itself, is a DVD of outtakes, radio sessions, video extras, and the entire album again, but with a video of a starry naked woman dancing throughout.

It seems to be the perfect amalgam of what the band have always wanted to release, and fans have always wanted to hear. Always the crusaders of experimenting with music, there is no doubt that they’d be short of extra goodness to squish into their CDs. With this album, it’s the first they’ve actually felt was a complete album, and not just another one of their crazed experimental delving into the depths of sonic depravity.

From their early days, of playing gigs with the heavy revs of a motorbike on stage with them, through to the album that was snipped into 40 different pieces across 40 different car radios in a parking lot one dark night, they arrive at At War With The Mystics with a certain drive to address the current lack of moral fibre in politics and life.

The Flaming Lips pose the idea of life as a beautiful Aurora Borealis of possibilities, not to be squandered on greed, money, deception, lies, betrayal, George Bush.

The new 2 disc set contains that manifesto and hours more. Maybe just long enough for some people to complete the journey of transition. Maybe some business banker or trade executive will buy this album by accident. Maybe they’ll give it a listen, just to see what kids are wasting their lives on these days, and maybe 2 hours and 27 minutes in, it’ll be too late to recover…they’ll be lost in the mists of space…and maybe the world will be a little bit of a better place…?
