South London’s Brent Flood have their eyes on the stadiums of the world. This record clearly aims at the same record-buying market that made Embrace and Snow Patrol the No.1 bands that they are. And while there are signs of promise running throughout this five-track EP that the band have enough talent to make a decent record, there’s just not enough tunes here to make you think that they are ever going to be anything other than a James Blunt support act. “Heavy Petting” is the highlight here, sounding like Chris Cornell’s theme from the last Bond picture with lyrics from some wannabe-stud schoolboy trying to be naughty (‘I’ve never met a woman so horny in the workplace’). “Lifebelt” is an odd mix of Damien Rice and Red Hot Chilli Peppers that threatens to crash into a gorgeous Frank Turner chorus but instead settles for a big rock-out in the grand tradition of band’s who can’t write tunes. Give them a year or two and maybe they’ll have written that their “Run” that makes them the band they want to be, but right now they just remind you of Nickelback. I shivered when I typed that.
