Multi layering, inhibition releasing frivolity comes at you with string led earnestness and spirit for the sporadic A-side. Vocalist come synth manipulator, Emily Haines sets things of ponderingly in the Joanna Newsom vein, with her last almost whispered touch exclaiming:
“You couldn’t see what’s coming.”
Too right, as the racing electro element kicks in and the Kim Wilde in her comes gushing out. Jimmy Shaw (guitar) and Josh Winstead (bass), rush in to embolden the sound to searing proportions and defiance takes over in the theme stakes. Atmospheric, instrumental punches punctuate the force of this crafted outfit that has been growing since 2003, before Joules Scott-Key’s stroking percussion brings things down in mood and tone and takes us gently to the end. A Howie B remix of ‘The Police And The Private’ unveils a spacey/techno chug to the nudge the scattered vocals of Haine’s, before dropping delicately into lounge, chill-out territory. There is spice, variety and range a plenty here.
