Billy Talent seem to be one of those bands that like to do punk the old fashioned way, therefore similar in some respects to Hovis and the way they make bread. There’s no artificial angst or baggy shorts just pure, adrenaline pumped fury about ‘serious’ stuff.
With lyrics like ‘one last hit’ and ‘vultures round the dead’ I would guess there is a message about the evils of drugs in here somewhere.
But while this is perfectly commendable it unfortunately doesn’t translate into being a good song. It’s all a bit boring, a bit too old fashioned. It’s full of stodgy guitars and vocals so snarled and nasal it sounds like singer Ben Kowalewicz is having his nostril hairs ripped out and replaced by tiny microphones as part of some bizarre new recording technique.
This is perhaps part of a bad batch as Billy Talent are usually so consistent when it comes to making kick-ass punk noise but sometimes it’s best to remember that being ‘old fashioned’ is called that for a reason.
