Hansom Pilot
Hansom Pilot - Hansom Pilot EP
Released: 26th February 2007
Label: eleventh hour

Usually I’m quite polar in my opinions on bands – I either really like them or can’t stand them. Hansom Pilot has caused me some consternation, not just because the name seems to be spelt so stupidly, but because the 2 main aspects of the music just don’t seem to sit together properly. In fact, you don’t even need to listen to the music, you just need to look at a photo of them: it looks like the Sugababes are performing with Stereophonics. I’m not one to judge just on appearance, but this is exactly what they sound like too.

Herein lies the tension: the vocals are too bubblegum pop, whereas the music itself is too indie rock. The musicianship itself is nothing interesting, nothing beyond your typical chart indie band, and although I have to admit hearing a bit of the Smashing Pumpkins in their sound from time to time it’s just not enough to save the band. Mixing genres has obviously worked in the past – with, for example, Evanescence – but this only really happens when the 2 genres are very different from one another. Pop and indie are perhaps too closely related for their offspring to be anything distinct.

It says a lot that they refer to themselves on their website as having an ‘anglo-american’ sound, which, as we all know, means pop drivel hidden behind the guise of rock because they throw a bit of guitar in. No song on the EP seems to have any differentiation from the others, but you couldn’t even say that they’re a bad band, as the writing, singing and performing is all distinctly average. They are too bland to be interesting, or to rouse love or hate from me, which – if I’m honest – is all too easy normally. Too rocky for pop types and too poppy for rock types, I can’t really see what their target audience is, and even if they found it, I’m fairly sure they wouldn’t be all that bothered about the band anyway.
