I’m a hard person to please with Metal music - if I like metal album, I normally love it. Recent albums from Jesu, Mastodon and Isis have had me jibbering incoherently over several listens. However, if I don’t like a metal band, I really don’t like them.
Breed 77 fit into the latter, Look at Me Now is not a particularly good song, in fact its terrible, it’s just so tame it could be a song by Celine Dion. It’s not metal its meek-al. Tracks like the Unforgiven by Metallica is a real metal ballad, this in comparison falls short of the mark by a huge distance. The song completely falls flat: it sounds like another big Evernesence/ Nickleback power ballad and uses every trick in the book with the quiet-loud verse chorus pattern, which might have worked if the band had any originality or diversity in their sound.
The tracks b-sides don’t really add much, one is a cover of the Cranberries song Zombie in a similar mould to Look At Me Now, but all in all its pretty uninspiring. The other songs are tracks from their newest album Un Encentro sung in their native Spanish take an interesting spin on Metal music and adds some Latino elements but there isn’t anything that is at all exciting about this band, certainly compared to Mastodon, Isis and Jesu.
