Opening the evening was the new band of Gary Powell (Dirty Pretty Things, The Libertines), The Invasion Of. Their eclectic mix of rock ‘n’ roll was very reminiscent of Powell’s previous outfits, with the same garage rock edge.
Next up was Norwegian born, Camden-based musician Eric Ness. Supported by a seven-piece band, Ness skilfully fused jazz, pop, and swing sounds. The singer/songwriter had the crowd dancing up a storm with his energetic brand of music. The back-up singers added a feminine element and charmed the male members of the audience with seductive dance moves and sultry voices. Among the other seven instruments on stage were a double bass and a mandolin, adding depth to the sound.
Then it was time for Kites, one of the hottest new bands in the UK at the moment. Described as bridging the gap between Joy Division and Donna Summer, expectation were high for Kites and they didn’t disappoint. Charismatic frontman Matthew Phillips won over the crowd with his melodic voice and charming stage presence. He is a mix between the dance moves and flamboyance of Freddie Mercury, and the looks and voice of Brandon Flowers from The Killers. Each band member had their own unique style, together they produced harmonious sounding indie electro music. Female drummer Georgie O bashed out the beats with panache. While guitarist Taio Lawson was suave with a relaxed and cool look. Kites incorporate an 80s sound with synth driven melodies for a modern, easy listening effect. The lyrics are intelligent and thought provoking, as well as being easy to relate to and entertaining. Kites played an engaging and energetic set, earning a room full of new fans on the night.
The final act of the evening was new indie band The Book Club, founded by Joe Carnall of infamous Sheffield band Milburn. Carnall has previously toured with The Arctic Monkeys and this new act has a similar sound but with a slightly darker edge and more rock riffs. The Book Club finished off a fantastic night of music, proving that there are so many talented musicians and acts in the UK on the cusp of huge success.
