One of the friendliest gigs I’ve ever experienced, Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly proves that small, simple and intimate gigs are sometimes the best sort. I arrived in time to see support band Keith power through an energetic and polished set; after the release of their debut album it seems suprising and perhaps a little unjust that they are still taking support slots, but they most definitely do the job well. Highlight for me was the funky bounce of ‘Hold That Gun’ – it would just have been nice if the crowd had been a bit more appreciative!
Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly. however, received a warm welcome on taking the stage, and launched straight into heartfelt renditions of his thoughtful and intelligent songs. Most of his set was taken from his recently released debut album, and from the sing-along response it’s clear that he is not short of fans, and justifiably so. His friendly manner and enthusiasm made the atmosphere exactly how you’d hope, and in introducing the band and explaining the inspiration behind each song it seemed as though Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly. was as happy to be there as we were. Musically, his talent is undisputable yet seems so effortless, and it’s a refreshing change to hear passionate songs about issues that really matter, without a hint of dullness. The simple approach really does work here, and this show really is all about the songs; no flashy lights, no effects and no egotism, just good atmosphere and captivating music.
