Altamont Never Say Die! Tour
Altamont Never Say Die! Tour @ Academy 3, Manchester
Date: 12th November 2008
Support: Parkway Drive, Architects, Unearth, Despised Icon, Protest the Hero and Carnifex.

With such an early start, and full line up, it was guaranteed to be busy, but little did I know how great it would be.

Protest the Hero, hotly tipped for great things, were brilliant. Enormous riffs, very tight and fascinatingly capturing.

Unearth were up next and all that seemed to have happened since the last time they played here, is that they’ve all aged. However it was a sound set, nothing overly exciting, but my word the volume was extortionate, the way real metal should be. I just hoped for the sake of my ear drums that it didn’t get louder with each of the bands as we still had a good few left!

It was during the Architects set that I had an epiphany. This metal music that so many enjoy, especially modern metal, has such a male following, and is seen as so manly and burly, yet when you look at the bands that perform it, they are so overly camp and girly. Take the Architects. Great sound, good riffs and stupid lyrics, and yet not matter how hard front man Sam Carter tries, there is no way him, or most of his band will ever be hard!

The headliners Parkway Drive fit the job description perfectly, and put on a show stopping, top of the bill performance. The crowd loved it, the band loved it, and it really showed. The amount of hands, and bodies, in the air, sing-along’s and dance-along’s makes it sound like some sort of circus, but my word it was a set to be proud of.
