With the current trend of many bands saluting eighties electronic pop it appears that another one has come to “’ave a go” under the guise of White Rose Movement. You know the style. Crooning vocals floating across a landscape of deep bass lines, thrashing guitars and breakouts of synth, whilst electronic beeps and whirls sound from beneath it all. This, like so many bands of the moment, is exactly what the White Rose Movement single, Love is a Number achieves. However, if this is the case then what is the incentive to listen, I hear you ask? Well, it’s actually very good.
The track kicks straight in and within a matter of seconds the bass line has got you hooked and you begin your joy ride through the song. The manic energy of the track spins you around like a ride on a fairground waltzer at night, making you disorientated in noise and movement amongst an attractively seedy atmosphere. Although doffing ones cap towards bands such as Depeche Mode, Joy Division and The Sound, Love is a number plays more like a continuation of the work made by these past bands instead of simply paying a vein homage to them.
With bands like Editors, The Bravery and The Killers splintering off from the same school of eighties style pop to compete against one another; it is hard to say whether White Rose Movement will be fortunate or forgotten in their attempt. All that seems to be certain is that this single is going to be enjoyed and passionately regarded for the foreseeable future and if they can back it up with a second single equally as good, then who knows? Maybe the rest will just follow.
