What better place to celebrate the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ than in the crypt of the nearest church... or at least one renovated for the purposes of gigs, plays and club nights. Tonight’s event at the Oran Mor’s very own Venue saw it take another step to challenging the hegemony of King Tuts and Nice n Sleazy’s as the place all up n’ coming Glasgow bands want to perform.
First up, electro-rock trio The Retrosexuals throw out their funk contortopop from beneath the guise of velvet trilby’s, army jackets and tracky-b’s. The only disappointment is that there aren’t more folk about to enjoy the hypnotic paranoia of ‘Too Many People’ or the fist-pumping 80’s thump of grand finale and new single ‘Telephone’. They are worthy of much more.
Headline act Isosceles cut dynamic figures on stage, blending catchy riffs, funky bass-lines and almost child-like synth samples with tongue-in-cheek lyrics full of humour. ‘How about it?’ turns an anti-drugs television advert on its head to become an instant classic, while ‘Darling Look at Your Hair’ discusses in depth the more serious issue of hot girls with crap hair. “Find out more on isosceles-dot-cock!” chuckles singer Jacky V between songs; this is certainly not a band that takes itself too seriously. Make no mistake though, this is not a comedy act, there’s enough pop in the melodies and rock in the riffs to have everyone bouncing around like loons by the time they finish with frantic ode to art-chicks ‘Kitch Bitch’. Refreshing, energetic and downright hilarious; the only surprise is that they’re not massive already!
