Two More Years is the latest single release from Bloc Party’s Mercury nominated album Slient Alarm. It is also the most lacking and toothless single they have released so far. Two More Years apes late 90’s band Mansun in a subdued album moment and is therefore surely a backwards step in music. It is not progressive to have singles copying album tracks of bands that departed us at least five years ago. The track slowly builds using Bloc Party’s imaginative use of hi-hat into a danceable rhythm and layering of vocals to a repetitive chorus of ‘Two more years, Two more years’ which will do nothing other than get stuck annoyingly in your head particularly if you were to hear the song on radio. Whilst this song is obviously Bloc Party at the first listen, it is unfortunately lacking the epic nature of some of the earlier singles such as Banquet and therefore it is unsurprising that this is released at the same time as the band go on a full national tour of sold out venues.
Lyrically, (I might be missing the point here) but it doesn’t explain what is causing Two More Years of pain which makes the whole episode more woeful in my opinion. I would suggest that you don’t buy this single, so that young wannabe musicians and unsigned bands think that this meaningless, repetitive, backdated music is acceptable in the new millennium. Although being fair Bloc Party set a bar earlier this year with their singles which points this out as quite simply their worst single released to date.
