The first single from ‘The Poison’- ‘Suffocating Under Words Of Sorrow’ is a powerful statement and encapsulates BFMV’s take on modern metal. This is confident, intelligent, heavy music simultaneously embracing the early sounds of maiden and priest and propelling it into a new form of power.
BFMV are having a meteoric rise in the current metal scene, winning Kerrang’s 2005 ‘Best newcomers’ award and very positive reviews. Their last song ‘4 words (To choke upon.)’-Which contains one of the heaviest riffs in recent memory-was single of the week on Zane Lowes BBC radio 1 show.
‘Suffocating…’ sound is fresh and echoes Megadeth circa ‘Holy wars…’, but BFMV seem to twist the sound, coming off with a hybrid lesser bands would not attain.
Matt Tuck and Micheal pads guitar work is sublime-clear yet distorted with a crunch that pummels the listener. Harmonizing like it is second nature; with some classic runs, BFMV show technical ability. With harmonics liberally placed and story telling solo’s that actually go somewhere shows maturity too.
This first single does everything a single should do: inform the listener of what to expect, show a direction and leave them wanting more.
The anticipation for the new album ‘The Poison’ is great, it’s clear BFMV will rise to the challenge of best new metal band;’ Suffocating…’ is compulsory listening, and a great starting point for anyone wanting to check BFMV out.
