McQueen arrive on stage to an anxiously waiting crowd who want to experience some genuine rock and roll frenzy. At this very moment the UK has an up and coming trio of all girl rock acts fighting for mainstream success. McQueen, The Hedrons and The Tommys are trying to take centre stage away from the boys who very much rule the roost nationwide. Tonight it’s McQueen chance to set the pace with a small venue tour to promote the release of their debut album ‘Break the Silence’.
McQueen arrive on stage and begin a massively energetic set that thrills those gathered creating a tight sweaty atmosphere. Lead singer Leah Duors has a growl that seems straight from hell giving the band a far heavier sound that any of their rivals. The sound they produce seems to exist somewhere between rock and heavy grindcore from some blood drenched abattoir. This seems to draw a wider musical demography from typical indie-rock fans to hardcore metal-heads. They blast through and energetic set that showcases the debut release with full-blooded renditions of ‘Break the Silence’ and ‘Blinded’. In a musical world lacking in authenticity McQueen seem to have something beyond the ordinary in their ranks. They play with a true ferocity that sets them slightly apart from a host of other acts and strut around like snarling harpies.
When one is asked to name famous all girl rock acts very little comes to mind over the years. The world badly needs a full on, balls to the wall femme driven rock sound to put the boys in their place. McQueen are beginning what could be a rise to the very top as the amount of authentic rock in the world is in short supply to say the least. Anyone who wants a night out that involves women with attitude to burn coupled with a voice whose power is as frightening as it is unique, really need to check out this lot.
