This band rock heavy in the style of early Incubus with a touch of hardcore thrown in. Soaring vocals, jamming guitars, heavy drums its got all you need for that nu-metal mix.
My main complaint with nu-metal is that often the riffs sound a bit monotonous with Limp Bizkit being the worst offenders, but Laruso mix these stop-start nu-metal riffs with anguished angry vocals and virtuoso guitar playing, so the riffs blend as part of the music and sound just right.
Track Four proves that this band have a real knack for a pop hook as well as doing the heavy stuff, but when they drop the heaviness altogether as they do with their obligatory ballad, it doesn’t really work as well.
“Under” is probably the standout track for me, mixing up System of a Down-esque vocal hooks with some neat hardcore shouts, leading to one of those Incubus style choruses and quiet bridge parts, leading to all manner of twists and turns, without ever losing sight of the song itself.
To be honest, what with the ballad and all, the album loses a bit of momentum towards the end, but it still manages to rock more often than not, although the second half eschews most of the full on heaviness for poppier hooks.
I have to say that admittedly this isn’t my favourite kind of music, preferring my metal a bit heavier and grittier for the most part, but to fans of this kind of music I have to say that I’d recommend this band very highly indeed.
