Now, I don’t like the Stereophonics, used to though, but went off them after the release of ‘Just enough education to perform’. It all got a little too slack and namby panby, especially with that awful cover of ‘handbags and the glad rags. But upon hearing the first few chords of this brand new song ‘moviestar’, the style was so different I almost fell off my seat. For a start there are some nice swirly effects in the intro, the fuzzed guitar sound is so dirty it’s beautiful, the driving drums pattern is akin to dance crossover acts like Primal Scream, and the diamond edged staccato guitars in the chorus are very nice indeed. It’s a live recording though which is a little baffling as the press bumf says that the song was recorded over a twenty-four hour period, must have been a long gig then. The other two tracks are just live versions of previous album material and a bit bog standard, but as I say, the title track is very impressive indeed and a nice change.
