They first picked up their guitars in 1991 and since then they've sold 60 million albums worldwide, released a double-disc greatest hits record and played live to millions of adoring fans across the globe. Their last tour ended abruptly in Denmark in 2000 when nine fans were tragically killed and they haven't played in Europe since. This marks their eighth studio album. This is the legendary Pearl Jam.
This self-titled album is very much what you would expect from Pearl Jam - riotous guitars, raw vocals and pounding drums very much in the stereotypical rock'n'roll vein pioneered by the likes of AC/DC but given a slightly more modern edge and some Bon Jovi style popness. From 'World Wide Suicide' (a limited edition single released at the end of April), through 'Comatose' and 'Severed Hand', Pearl Jam prove they've still got the expertise to produce big-stage rock music that their established fans and blokes with long hair will adore.
There are a couple of quieter numbers - 'Parachutes' and 'Come Back' - which discuss loss of life and where the band offers poignant, reflective moments. These are both charmingly written and will no doubt spark the appearance of lighters waving over heads if ever played live.
A solid album from an outstanding band. For more information you can visit: http://www.pearljam.com
