Nothing low key or understated about this band. I’m not even gonna try and subside the excitement of their forthcoming return to the album charts. The Monkeys are back, thank God, let the kids focus on something good, because in the gap between the two albums, which is very nearly over, they’ve been flocking to Pete Doherty’s band asking “What does heroin feel like, Frank?” and Frank says, “it feels like Maximo Park and Snow Patrol”, and that's just downright unhealthy.
So when Monkeys II drops in the shops - titled ‘Favourite Worst Nightmare’ - no ones gonna attempt to be objective, are they? Well don't, I beg you, please. Let it ride, let them clean up, for God’s sake, for music sake.
As for Brianstorm, (Typo? – No, Brian is the protagonist of the track, “See you later innovator”) the band have been beefed up in the studio. While the bass line was being recorded, the boys pumped the channels with protein shakes, giving the new sound an edge and a guitar weight that Muse have been wiping floors with for years. The rhythms of Alex Turner's vocal is welcome. With his all too familiar delivery and quirky lyric style, it could have been a track on the 1st album WYSIATWIN but for the production.
Note: Usually when a demo or promo arrives accompanied by a press release there is a biog, photee or maybe a description that ‘sells’ the record. A chance to drop names; an associate or two. When Brianstorm, arrives via post there is none of this. One track CD, no blurb, just release date, logo, no hype. Why? Because there’s not gonna be any...it won’t be necessary this time around.
